What is the PHInternship?

PHI heavily relies on bridging cultural divides through local community involvement. Extensive work such as book drives, hygiene collections, tote bag/penpal making requires many hands and significant time. Enhancing PHI’s presence in Central Florida is essential to securing adequate resources for donations and for growing PHI’s larger mission statement.

By offering opportunities to work as a PHI intern, we aim to accomplish 2 objectives:

  1.   Facilitate greater grassroots growth of our organization by encompassing more individuals, and by proxy, more connections to anything that PHI is looking to put efforts towards. Out of new community collaboration also sparks potential for new ideas and programs to be developed.
  2.   Elevate our mission’s effort and impact through the greater involvement of the Central Florida community.

Responsibilities

This program will select high school students to become PHI’s youth interns. These interns will act as liaisons for their respective schools, help facilitate community events hosted by PHI, and work on their own service project.

Specifically, their duties will consist of the following:

  • Volunteerism: Tabling events, sorting and packaging materials, and simple organizational work
  • Leadership/communication: Bring PHI’s mission to their own schools and facilitating established programs, expand PHI’s network through advocacy at school/community, act as a key link to younger audiences to promote growth
  • Project Development and Management: Interns will have the opportunity to design their own community/service project that targets a specific issue. Directors will act as advisors and can help them with connections and systems to make their project come to life by the Spring.
  • Monthly meetings: Both in-person and virtual meetings will be held by Director of Programs in order to hold interns accountable and share important information regarding volunteer projects/passion projects

Details & Timeline

The Fall semester will consist of interns bringing programs such as the Pediatric Care Program to their own school. Interns will be in charge of leading, managing, collecting, and retrieving materials. The Fall is also when they will brainstorm ideas for their passion project and begin planning. Directors and even City Leads will act as “Near Peer Mentors” to give advice and help them with connections. An established meeting will be held to have them pitch their project proposal before initial action is taken.

The Spring semester will still have established program facilitation. Passion project actions are required by the beginning of the Spring to allow sufficient time. Details for each project are flexible, as long as there is appropriate communication with Sophia, Director of Programs.
